Puppy Training Resources

Golden Retrievers are a popular breed because of their friendly, outgoing, and intelligent nature. However, training is essential to help them develop good habits, prevent unwanted behaviors, and become well-behaved companions. At Retriever Buddies, we start our puppies off with crate training, potty training, and recall training. However, it's extremely important for families to commit to training at home to ensure a successful outcome.

Training a puppy can be challenging but should be a rewarding experience for both the puppy and the family. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Start early: Puppies have a short attention span and are constantly learning, so it's best to start training as early as possible. This will help your puppy develop good habits and prevent unwanted behaviors from forming.

  2. Positive reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. Reward your puppy with treats, praise, or toys when they exhibit good behaviour. Avoid using punishment or harsh methods, as this can damage your puppy's trust and relationship with you.

  3. Consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to training. Use the same commands and techniques every time to help your puppy learn what is expected of them. This will help prevent confusion and make the training process more effective.

  4. Exercise: Golden Retrievers are active dogs and require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Take your puppy on daily walks or play games like fetch to help burn off excess energy. This can also help prevent unwanted behaviors like chewing and digging. However, it’s important to be careful not to overwork your puppy’s joints while they're growing. Mental games such as snuffle mats, scent work, and obedience training do wonders to tire a puppy out

  5. Patience: Remember, training a puppy takes time and patience. Be patient with your puppy and celebrate their progress, no matter how small. With time, consistency, and positive reinforcement, your puppy will develop into a well-behaved and happy companion.

In conclusion, training is an essential part of owning a puppy. With the right approach and resources, you can help your puppy develop good habits and become a well-behaved and happy companion for years to come.
